CLASS A CDL: The Semi Truck Driving program provides the necessary education for men and women to prepare themselves for a variety of entry-level positions as commercial drivers. This program’s curriculum focuses towards primary information about commercial vehicles and their proper operation. Upon your successful completion of this 10-week program, you will have received all the necessary entry-level skills to have earned your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and a College Technical- Diploma.

If you are interested in our Semi Truck Driving Program and you haven’t applied to our college in the past, you will need to do just that, apply After the application process you will receive start dates for our program. This will give you an opportunity to choose available start dates that best fit your schedule. Upon starting in this program you will find yourself and others progressing  according to individual skills and abilities with the professional guidance of our instructors.

The curriculum focuses on theory, or the ‘roots’ of the industry, as well as honing or developing your backing and driving skills during classroom and lab experiences.

Completion of the program requires 43 hours of instruction per week for 10 weeks. If needed, additional time is available. Prior to graduation, each student will need to complete the necessary skill competencies in the Truck Driving program.

Approximate cost for the 10 week program is $2,500 which includes $2074.80 for tuition, $100 for textbooks and material fees, $121 for DOT physical and drug test, and $85 for CDL skills test fee.  Additional costs at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) may be required.

The course will include typical daily contacts that a professional truck driver may have with fellow drivers, dispatchers, shippers, consignees, mechanics, the general public, or law enforcement personnel. Many aspects of professional driving as a career especially driver lifestyles are thoroughly covered throughout this course.

Fox Valley Technical College is a member of NAPFTDS- The National Association of Publicly Funded Truck Driving Schools (NAPFTDS) is an organization for the promotion of public education for the transportation industry. Through membership, educators can network with other schools across the country to provide the highest quality, most cost-effective, and most up-to-date training available.

If you are planning to pursue truck driving as a career, the industry suggests you may need good dexterous skills, patience, self-discipline, maturity, a good driving record and no criminal record.

Qualifications You Need

  • Safety Awareness: Drivers must understand and comply with rules set by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
  • Good Health: You will be required to pass a  DOT physical examination and drug test to attend our Truck Driving program and to be employed in the industry. This physical and drug test will be scheduled as part of your first day of class – current cost to you is $121.00
  • Minimum Age: Interstate drivers must be 21 years of age, while intrastate drivers can be 18 to 21 years old.
  • Valid License:  Drivers must have a valid class ‘D’ driver’s license. If you do not have a valid Wisconsin Driver’s license (coming from out of state) be sure to communicate this with your Program Advisor on the very first day of class for special instructions
  • Communication Skills: Drivers must be able to read and speak English well enough to understand traffic signs, prepare reports and communicate with others.
  • Other: Many trucking companies have additional requirements that employees must meet.
